Honolulu Spring Cleaning Tips
Spring is almost here, Honolulu! If you’ve spent the last season huddled inside, now’s a great time to open those windows and think about spring cleaning. You may have your typical spring cleaning regimen, but all too often homeowners can skip over a few important tasks.
These are some recommendations to get the most out of your spring cleaning from your floors to your shutters, so you’re able to enjoy the prettiest season in Honolulu.
Spring Clean Your Windows
It’s normal to get up in mid-March and realize that the less-than-stellar view out your window isn’t due to winter weather–it’s due to a filthy window. Spring is the perfect time to give your windows a deep clean. Get that beautiful view back with these steps.
-
If your window opens, open it all the way and clean out any dirt, dust or debris in the sill or track. First clean out as much as you can with a dry cloth or small brush, then use warm soapy water and a cloth or brush to clean out the rest. This helps your window open and close easier, and make sure your window can shut completely.
-
Spray down the glass with a glass cleaner. You can use either a cleaner you buy at the store, or create a homemade cleaner with two parts warm water and one part vinegar.
-
Clean the glass with a microfiber cloth. Microfibers are preferred for cleaning glass and leave fewer streaks.
Don’t Neglect to Clean the Window Treatments
A clean glass window is no good if the window treatment isn’t just as clean.
For fabric window treatments like drapes or curtains, cleaning can be a hassle. For thick fabrics, take them off the wall and shake them outdoors to get rid of any loose debris, then put them in the washer on a cold cycle and air dry them. For thinner window treatments, you’ll want to handle them more delicately, and wash them by hand in a sink or tub.
Plantation shutters are probably the simplest window treatment when it comes to cleaning. Get rid of dust by going once-over with a microfiber cloth or barely damp rag. To spot clean, use a slightly damp cloth to get rid of the stain, then go over with a dry cloth.
Spring is also an ideal time to think about switching up your window treatments. Visit the Sunburst Shutters Honolulu Idea Gallery to get inspired with beautiful window treatment ideas.
Give Some Love to Your Appliances
Your refrigerator, oven and washer and dryer are just as much furniture as appliances. Particularly with modern appliances like stainless steel appliances, looks can be equally as important as function. Clean all the nooks and crannies of your appliances, and restore them to their original condition.
Stainless steel appliances can be shined up using a solution made of 1 tsp. dish soap and 1 qt. of warm water, cleaned with a wet cloth and air-dried.
Get Every Single Surface
You’re likely going to give your floors and walls some much-needed TLC when you do your spring cleaning, but be sure to spread that attention around to some of those often neglected surfaces. These are just a few of the spots that are often forgotten when spring cleaning:
-
All switches or handles that are often touched. These could be in the bathroom, on electronics, or anywhere else in your home.
-
Various shower surfaces, including the door, floor, and soap ledge.
-
The tops of your ceiling fan blades.
-
Underneath appliances - especially the big appliances like your fridge164 and dishwasher.
