What type of Window Treatments Offer the Most Privacy?
Your house is your castle, and if you think like the majority of homeowners, finding Honolulu window treatments that add privacy and sound control to maintain your sanctuary is important. Any window treatment is preferable to an uncovered window. However there are some window treatments that add more privacy than others, particularly on nontraditional windows.
Improving Privacy on Specialty Windows
Most large, standard windows you have are simple to cover with just about any window treatment including blinds, shades, or shutters in Honolulu.
You might encounter some situations when you need a special type of window treatment to achieve the level of privacy you need. These include:
-
Windows in the bathroom where water and humidity can cause problems for fabric window treatments.
-
Sidelight windows that are long and thin where window treatments can be jostled around when you use the door.
-
Non-square windows such as arches, round windows, bow windows, etc., where normal rectangular blinds and shades can’t cover your window without hiding the window’s unique shape.
-
Large windows that are difficult to reach such as second-story foyer windows.
In these instances, you’ll want window treatments that go the distance to provide privacy to your house.
As a plus, look for window treatments that can block sound to keep random noise outside and keep inside noise inside.
The Best Window Treatments for Privacy
The most privacy-friendly window treatment we recommend are Polywood® plantation shutters. Plantation shutters are able to fully close, for when complete privacy and sound control is your goal. If you want to let light in and see outside, just give the louvers a tilt. For tall or high windows, you should position the louvers at an angle to let light in while still keeping your privacy.
Indoor shutters are also perfect for non-rectangular windows because they can be customized to fit any shape or size. And since Polywood shutters are moisture resistant, they’re perfect for bathrooms.
Another great window treatment for privacy is roller shades. Roller shades take up minimal space at the top of the window, but are easy to pull down to prevent anyone being able to see in your home. While they can’t be custom-fit to fit unique window shapes, you can find roller shapes made from water resistant material for areas such as the kitchen or bathroom.
Window Treatments that Don’t Protect Your Privacy
While any window covering gives you at least some privacy, there are two that aren’t as great as those we’ve mentioned. The first is sheer curtains. Sheer curtains were popular years ago and can add a breezy feeling to a room. However they’re easy to see through, particularly at night.
Another window covering that isn’t great for privacy are cheap or bulky blinds, which can bend and/or get stuck at an angle. If you can’t completely shut the blinds due to breakage, then they’re not helping keeping your home private.
